Playing modern boardgames is a very active, social adult hobby. Chances are you've enjoyed playing some of these with friends or family but you guess there's a lot more to it but don't quite know who to ask. This weekend is for you.
If you're unsure what we mean by "Modern Boardgames" read this article first. Complete beginners are extremely welcome but please come expecting any 'Monopoly-like' preconceptions to be shattered.
We'll play games, taking care and time over explaining the rules, dealing with any jargon, and helping you along the road to getting the most out of this fantastic social hobby. The aim is to cover a wide range of game types so you can go away with a clearer understanding of what's what in this fast-growing hobby.
You will need to be a good listener and a quick learner. These games will not be very complex but every one will be very different. In order to cover the range we won't have time to repeat anything other than very short games.
Most games should last 60-90 minutes; a few will be much shorter and we hope to work up to 'weightier' games by the end of the weekend.
Some have likened this weekend to a wine tasting, others to a Couch to 5K for brain cells, but it won't all be 'busyness'. There will also be plenty of opportunity to relax in the house and garden or up the hills for those who want to. Non-gaming partners are welcome.
We're not expecting you to know what all these mean. After all, you're coming in order to find that out. It's also quite possible that we'll run out of weekend before we've sampled all these.
These are off the menu either because they are not our forté, you know about them already or because it's really not what we're about.
Everyone should aim to arrive in good time for a 7pm start, having already eaten an evening meal. You are most welcome to arrive earlier in the day, park and go for a walk. We've plenty of parking here and the hills are on the doorstep.
Part of this evening will be finding out which games people are familiar with, and what they'd like to get out of the weekend.
These days with a light (non-cooked) breakfast of cereals, fruit, yoghurts, fresh bread, jams, etc. around 8:30-9:00am then we'll start on the games around 10am. Lunch will be around 1pm and will comprise freshly baked bread, cheeses, smoked fish, salads, etc.
On the Saturday there will be an evening meal, typically something like pizza with garlic bread & salad with cheesecake to follow. Gaming will continue into the evening, aiming to finish by 11pm.
On the Sunday, you are welcome to stay until around 4pm.
There is the option of booking extra nights either side of the weekend.

Pets are not allowed in the B&B (except assistance dogs) otherwise there is no provision for dogs at this event.
Email or phone us to check availability. To confirm a booking we require a non-refundable deposit of £50 per person please. The remainder can be paid during the event. We can take cash, credit/debit card or bank transfer.
Initially no, but if the rooms have filled and we have not reached the maximum number of participants then we will be open to non-resident attendees. Therefore, if you are interested in this option, ask to go on the waiting list.
The cost for a non-resident place will be £60 which includes the meals and refreshments, except breakfasts.
Our B&B Terms and conditions apply to all attendees.
Strictly speaking, the full cancellation terms apply and in particular the deposit is non-refundable. However, informally, we tend to use the following approach:
Please feel free to phone or email us if you've any questions. We reserve the right to bend rules where it seems right to do so.
We've been playing these sort of games since the early 1990's when a lot of the better games were German - we still have a few of these on the shelves alongside some of the most recent publications. The collection is now around 150, bigger than we'd naturally have because we keep a big spread to support our mainstream 'DellCon' boardgames weekends, B&B and self-catering guests and private bookings for games weekends.
The current collection is listed online here.
Elizabeth is vegetarian and veggie/vegan breakfasts is one of our specialities. We're happy to prepare something gluten-free when others are having pizza for example. With advance notice we are happy to provide soya products for dairy-free diets, etc. If your needs are a bit more specialist, just ask.
Diets we cannot provide for are specialities such as Halal and Kosher.
Yes, we have a sizeable car park. You will need to park neatly to fit everyone in but that's always worked so far. You'll get details nearer the time if there are spaces we need to reserve etc.
